When choosing a gas appliance—whether it’s a fireplace, heater, or log set—the decision between vented and unvented (vent-free) isn’t just about efficiency or looks.


It’s about:

  • Where it can be installed

  • How it operates

  • What code allows (or doesn’t allow)


And that’s where most people get it wrong.



🔥 Vented Appliances: Controlled & Code-Friendly


A vented appliance removes combustion gases from the building through a flue or vent pipe.


That means:

  • Carbon monoxide

  • Water vapor

  • Byproducts of combustion


All go outside where they belong.



Why This Matters


Because of that venting, these units:

  • Can be installed in more regulated environments (like commercial spaces)

  • Don’t affect indoor air quality

  • Don’t rely on room air for safe operation

You’re tied to vent routing.


That means:

  • They depend on safety devices like ODS (Oxygen Depletion Sensors)


And because of this, code gets very specific



⚖️ Code & Maine Restrictions (This is the big one)


This is where vented vs. unvented becomes a real decision—not just preference.

Under NFPA 54 and enforced by the Maine Fuel Board:


🚫 Unvented appliances are NOT allowed in:

  • Bedrooms

  • Bathrooms

  • Confined spaces


Period. No exceptions.


Why?

Because those spaces:

  • Are smaller / tighter

  • Have less air volume

  • Increase risk if oxygen levels drop


Even with an ODS, It’s not considered enough protection in those environments

Unvented heaters must:

  • Be properly sized to the room

  • Have sufficient combustion air

  • Be installed in spaces that meet minimum volume requirements


You can’t just throw one in a tight room and call it good


So What Should You Actually Do?


Use Vented when:

Use Unvented when:
